WHO IS A CARER? A carer is someone who provides help or support to a relative, partner, friend or neighbour with mental health problems. There is no single pattern to the help and support provided by carers. Some carers provide continuous support for a family member who lives in the same house. Others may be called upon intermittently to help someone who experiences occasional periods of mental distress or they may provide support and practical help to their relative or friend who is being cared for in hospital or in a residential care setting. Some carers provide long-term emotional and financial stability while others offer more limited practical assistance such as shopping, sorting out bills or helping to find suitable accommodation. Carers, like the people for whom they care, will come from diverse backgrounds and communities. They may be old or young, working or unemployed, they may be providing help and support to their partner, parent, son or daughter, neighbour or friend. The caring relationship could be two-way - for example a person with mental health problems who receives emotional support from his or her elderly parents may be providing them with the practical help they need due to their physical disabilities.
